Are there any Fediverse servers that can be deployed on cheap shared hosting? #fediadmin #FediMeta
@astrojuanlu by all accounts GoToSocial
@astrojuanlu GoToSocial has support for environments with limited hardware resources as one of its goals. There's also snac which is another order of magnitude tinier.
I should have said, "any non-WordPress Fediverse servers that can be deployed on cheap shared hosting"
Many developers (including myself) still do not accept the fact that cheap shared hosting = PHP files over FTP and no SSH access
@astrojuanlu I don’t think so, a small instance has a lot of database costs and media assets (in addition to traffic and other less measurable resources), I imagine it’s the cost of federation. At least talking about #mastodon, but maybe there are some other more viable options.
Please let me know if you find something viable.
@julian The installation instructions only show SSH-enabled VPS and containers https://docs.gotosocial.org/en/latest/getting_started/installation/metal/
So I don't know how to deploy it to a shared hosting (typically no SSH, FTP, PHP, MySQL/PostgreSQL, and not much else)
About snac, I suppose you mean https://codeberg.org/grunfink/snac2 ? I don't see in the docs any deployment manuals for shared hosting. Everything seems to assume SSH.
@astrojuanlu Yeah sorry, I misunderstood what you meant. It's possible to run ActivityPub on shared hosting, but I'm not aware of any mature projects. @Edent has a barebones demo server that proves the concept: https://gitlab.com/edent/activitypub-single-php-file
@julian @astrojuanlu
Hello! Mine is a simple PHP file which you can upload via FTP.
Doesn't require a database.
Warning - it is a proof of concept. It works, but it isn't pretty!
